Comprehensive Finance For Non-Finance Course

Course Overview:

In this workshop, you will learn how to read financial statements, how to use accounting methods to forecast revenue and plan for growth, how to discuss and report financial data in the appropriate terminology, indispensable terms that will help you speak the language of finance and accounting. You will learn the practical financial skills that will help you make more effective decisions – knowledge that you will use throughout your career.

This course, designed for professionals from non-finance background, uses case study and Ingenium board games strategy designed to demonstrate you how the world of accounting and finance works in a controlled game-like environment.

We start from scratch, showing you how the income statement and balance sheet build up and demonstrating the importance of cash in business, using our simulation game. Our board game allows learners to experientially discover the big picture of how business works and how business success is measured in a safe environment – and have fun while doing so!

Upon completion of this course, participants shall be able to learn about:

  • Cash operating cycle; how it works, key concepts of cash operating cycles in decision-making and how it impacts company’s bottom line
  • Business analysis; how to interpret financial statements, and analyse businesses using various approaches; horizontal and vertical analysis;
  • Ratio analysis to compare performances of companies operating in similar industry
  • Investment appraisal; impact of budgeting and projections in business decisions; payback period, discount factor, net present value and internal rate of return methods of project appraisal
  • Concept and impact of “time value of money”

DAY ONE – FINANCE FOR NON FINANCE COURSE

i. FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

  • Understand the main components of financial statements and they fit together;
  • Appreciate the key underlying accounting concepts used in the preparation of financial statements

ii. COSTING CONCEPTS

  • Identify variable and fixed costs, capital and revenue expenditure and discuss their impact
  • Direct and indirect costs, contribution margin analysis, Break-even analysis, etc.
  • Understand costing concepts, and apply them in making business decisions

iii. CASH OPERATING CYCLE

  • Describe the key elements of cash operating cycles and how it works
  • Appreciate the concept of cash operating cycles in business decisions and how it impacts company’s bottom line

DAY TWO – FINANCE FOR NON FINANCE COURSE

iv. BUSINESS ANALYSIS

  • Elaborate how the income statement (P&L), Balance Sheet and Cash flows fit together,
  • Appraise financial performance of any using liquidity, operating and gearing ratios
  • Know how to interpret financial statements and analyse businesses using various approaches; ; horizontal and vertical analysis
  • Apply ratio analysis to compare performances of companies operating in similar industry

v. INVESTMENT APPRAISAL

  • Discuss the impact of budgeting and projections in business decisions
  • Understand the payback period, discount factor, net present value and internal rate of return methods of project appraisal in decision-making

  • Understand briefly the concepts of shareholder value, gearing and weighted average cost of capital
